Nil Battey Sannata is a 2015 Hindi language comedy-drama film. (did you know that the film was originally named The New Classmate). The movie is directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari.  The movie stars Swara Bhaskar as Chanda Sahay, Riya Shukla as Apeksha"Apu",  Shivlal Sahay, Aditi Tailang as Grownup Apeksha, Ratna Pathak Shah as Dr. Diwan, Pankaj Tripathi as Principal Srivastava, Ganesh Kumar as Hindi teacher, Sanjay Suri as District Collector, Neha Prajapati as Sweety, Prashant Tiwari as Pintu, Vishal Nath as Amar. 

 

The story is of a single mother played by Swara Bhaskar who is a household maid who decides to do something for herself. That one decision changes the dynamic between her daughter and her. The movie is set in Agra in a small community. The movie is a different take on motherhood and the teenage angst in Bollywood.

Coming back to the story, Chanda dreams for her daughter-Apu to become a big thing in her life and she is ready to provide for her regardless of their current financial situation. However, she is shattered when she hears from her daughter- “Doctor ka beta doctor, engineer ka beta engineer, toh bai ki beti bai hi banegi na..” the teenage angst was real although Chanda worked 4 jobs so that her daughter could do better for herself. 

 

Horrified Chanda decides to do something better and to our surprise, she joins her daughter’s school. Canada soon befriends other students and becomes the favorite of teachers, Apu tries to blackmail her and forces her to give up school constantly. 

 

The story progresses and so does Chanda’s will to win the battle against her stubborn daughter and teach her a valuable lesson. As Apu gets angrier and continues to fail in Maths, Chanda proposes that they have a battle as to who scores more in Maths, if Apu would win Chanda will leave the school.

 

The challenge brings such an interesting and hilarious twist to the story, as it is so fun to see the witty fights between Apu and Chanda over trigonometry. Swara Bhaskar is perfect for the role as she embodies the small-town single mother sick of her daughter’s tantrums yet worried as to how to provide a better life for her.  Not only the main lead but the whole cast of children were the cherry on the cake as school scenes were the most entertaining ones. 

 

The story is like fresh air in Bollywood with new writing and true to reality with the parent-child dynamic and horrors of Mathematics and showing the true evil that is capable of residing in the teenagers. The movie is wholesome with coming to a good hard work pays off type of end, a must-watch for Swara Bhaskar fans.
