7 Kadam is a 2016 Indian fiction sports drama web series the series is directed by Mohit Jha starring Ronit Roy and Amit Sadh as the main leads.

The story takes us through the lives of a father and son and the dynamic of their relationship. Ronit Roy plays the role of Aurbindo Pal, who was a successful football player in his time, due to a tragic injury he had to discontinue his game. Then we see the present times where his son Ravi Pal is also a football player. The rest of the series is about the Father and Son relationship and how they cope with the generational and ideological gap.

Coming back to the story of the series, the setting is in the heart of Kolkata. However before we set foot in the scenery of Kolkata, we should have a look at the title. The title of the series ‘7 Kadam’ is based on the teaching that ‘your goal is only as distant as the number of steps before it. The director Mohit Jha has managed to strike a balance between the emotional quotient in the series and the fiction part. Not only the story but the Mohit Jha has beautifully captured the essence of Kolkata, from the lanes to the Howrah Bridge to the Football stadium and our favorites -the yellow taxis. 

 

While the focus remains on the main characters, the story shows secondary characters with detail too, not just in the background. For instance, Ravi’s mother is totally against the idea of her son playing football, she does not want him to end up like his father. Amit Sadh looks the part of a football player with his dialogue delivery and performance. Ronit Roy with his Bong accent is a new avatar for Indian television however, he is likable. The story ties together well, if one thing is missing from the screen it is the time on the field. If the series showed more time on the football ground keeping in mind it is a sports drama, it would be the cherry on the top.  From direction to story and performances the mini web series is a treat to watch.
